Abstract: 

The Death in Custody Reporting Act of 2013 (DCRA), enacted in December 2014, “requires states that serve certain federal funding—as well as federal law enforcement agencies—to report to the Attorney General information on the deaths of individuals in the custody of state and local law enforcement agencies.” This article briefly reviews two reports that measure compliance with “DCRA: Deaths in Custody: Additional Action Needed to Help Insure Data Collected by DOJ Are Utilized” by Gretta L. Goodwin (GAO-22-106033) and “Uncounted Deaths in America’s Prisons & Jails: How the Department of Justice Failed to Implement the Death in Custody Reporting Act” by the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
