Abstract: 

This article describes the development and implementation of a critical framework for a model to improve outcomes in the lives of Black women with histories of incarceration. It examines the Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema, which although associated with poor outcomes, can help us understand why some approaches may not be effective for many Black women and to craft strategies that can be effective. To better understand the presence of the SBW schema in the lives of Black women with histories of incarceration (BWHI), the author conducted focus groups and interviews that concentrated on the unique challenges these women face, the impact on others as a result of these challenges, and Black women’s sources of strength.
