Abstract: 

Most professionals working in the field of domestic violence are familiar with the phenomenon of victim recantation, in which a victim retracts or minimizes their allegations of abuse. In the criminal courts, recantation happens in the vast majority of domestic violence cases; the cooperative victim is the exception. Recantation is a complex, multi-layered psychological process motivated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
