Abstract:

There is a sharp contrast between what is known about “what works” with convicted individuals and what is known about individuals in pretrial, where there has been much less research attention or application. Applying the RNR framework within the pretrial context presents opportunities to improve release decisions and recommendations by incorporating dynamic risk factors and fostering more personalized and effective “coaching” of defendants on supervision. This article explores the application of the RNR and coaching model in pretrial settings, examining its potential to align pretrial services with what is known and to create fairer, more effective, and more efficient pretrial practices while maintaining public safety and respecting the rights of the accused.
