Abstract:
Nearly half of U.S. adults would now meet criteria for hypertension under updated American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidance released in August 2025, which lowers diagnostic thresholds and emphasizes earlier, more tailored intervention. The article explains the revised blood-pressure categories (elevated, stage 1, stage 2, and hypertensive crisis), urges patients to confirm status with clinicians, and highlights lifestyle priorities—reduced sodium and alcohol intake, the DASH diet, regular aerobic activity, and adequate sleep. It also emphasizes risk-stratified treatment using the PREVENT cardiovascular risk calculator and greater use of home monitoring. Keywords: Hypertension Guidelines; PREVENT Risk Calculator; DASH Diet; Sodium Reduction; Home Blood Pressure Monitoring
