Abstract:
Correctional dental systems often operate with constrained treatment options, but these limits do not diminish the professional standards governing diagnostic care. This article emphasizes the critical distinction between intake screening and comprehensive dental examinations, arguing that abbreviated or undocumented assessments—particularly failure to record periodontal status—constitute defects in quality, not scope. It further demonstrates how gaps in documentation shape judicial review, as courts rely heavily on the medical record to assess deliberate indifference. Ultimately, the piece highlights how diagnostic practices, documentation, and system design influence both clinical outcomes and the legal visibility of systemic deficiencies in correctional dental care. Keywords: Correctional Dental Care; Diagnostic Standards; Periodontal Assessment; Intake Screening; Deliberate Indifference
