Abstract:

As abusers increasingly weaponize smart technology to monitor, control, and terrorize victims, the law has struggled to keep pace—until now. This article examines California’s groundbreaking SB 50, which gives survivors a powerful new tool: the ability to cut off an abuser’s access to connected devices and digital accounts. Moving beyond theory, it explains how technology-facilitated abuse operates in real life—from smart locks to hidden trackers—and how this law creates a practical, enforceable pathway to safety. For advocates, law enforcement, and practitioners, this is an essential guide to a rapidly emerging frontier in domestic violence—and a model for future reform nationwide.
