Abstract:

Probation and community sanctions have always depended on people and relationships: listening, setting boundaries, building trust and helping individuals find a path away from crime. Yet those human tasks now unfold in a world where almost every aspect of life—including offending, supervision and everyday communication—is mediated by digital technologies. Electronic monitoring, offender management systems, data analytics and artificial intelligence are no longer speculative ideas; they are already shaping decisions about liberty, risk and rehabilitation. This issue republishes contributions from leading European experts on the future of supervision technologies in a digital age, offering complementary vantage points on what this digital turn means for community corrections. Together, they raise a common question: how can probation and related services harness technology to enhance social inclusion and public safety without losing their ethical foundations, human character and rehabilitative purpose?
