Abstract:
Despite the devastating public health impact of methamphetamine addiction, no medication has yet been approved to treat it. In this article, Habibeh Khoshbouei and Marcelo Febo describe emerging research showing that methamphetamine and the inflammatory immune molecule TNF-α activate the brain's dopamine reward system through overlapping biological pathways. Their findings suggest that inflammation may play a far more direct role in addiction than previously recognized and identify a promising new therapeutic target. The authors also explore the possibility of repurposing existing anti-inflammatory medications already approved for other diseases, while emphasizing the additional research needed before these treatments can be applied to patients with methamphetamine use disorder.Keywords: Methamphetamine; Addiction; Dopamine; Neuroinflammation; TNF-α; Substance Use Disorder
