Abstract: 

Coercive control has emerged as one of the most important developments in domestic violence law. This article examines a landmark Washington appellate decision that broadens legal protection for survivors by recognizing patterns of intimidation, isolation, humiliation, and manipulation—even in the absence of physical violence—as grounds for a protection order. It also surveys legislative efforts across the country, including proposals to expand civil remedies and criminal penalties for coercive control. For attorneys, advocates, judges, and policymakers, this timely review explains how evolving legal standards are reshaping the way courts recognize and respond to nonphysical forms of abuse.
