Abstract:
On December 13, 2004, a Pennsylvania court granted the petition of the Barnes Foundation to move its world famous art collection from the suburban location prescribed by the donor to a new building to be constructed on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. Projections offered in the court proceedings indicated that four times as many visitors will be able to enjoy the collection in the new location. The move was a precondition to a funding proposal offered by three large Philadelphia foundations (called “alpha donors” by the court). The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Lenfest Foundation, and the Annenberg Foundation agreed to help raise $150 million to finance the move to new quarters. Keywords:
