Abstract: 

Rape is a violation of a person’s body, mind, and spirit. It is an intensely personal form of assault that has an impact on physical, emotional, occupational, and mental well-being. For prisoners, surviving sexual assault often means carrying the wounds in silence, living through multiple assaults, and being less able to function productively than before their incarceration. For society, the costs of prisoner rape range from the loss of productivity and health faced by survivors to a general increase in violence and the acceptance of violence.
