Abstract: 

The South Dakota Women’s Prison (SDWP) is a 310 bed adult female institution comprised of 3 buildings: a 214- bed secure unit, a 96-bed trusty unit and a 24-bed parent and child together (PACT) program house, which is used on weekends. This is the first all female prison in South Dakota and it was built on time and under budget and opened on November 17, 1997. The prison offers a wide range of educational programs as well as community work and drug treatment programs. In addition to these programs, SDWP offers a number of unique programs designed specifically to address the needs of women prisoners and the families they leave behind.
