Abstract:
When inmates require surgery, the procedures are often performed outside of the facility within which they are confined. However, the inmates are usually returned to the correction facility for their post-operative recovery period. Medical staff in a correctional facility must follow a surgeon’s reasonable post-operative instructions, especially with regard to the management of an inmate’s pain. Instructions for follow- up visits also need to be followed by all prison medical personnel. Part of necessary post-operative care may be ensuring that a recovering inmate is receiving proper nutrition. Prison authorities may not deny prescribed, medically necessary medicationsto inmates. Keywords: Harden v. Green, deliberate indifference, Creech v. Nguyen, Lopez v. Smith, Walker v.
