Abstract: 

Shockingly, to this very day, in schools across the country, children with disabilities—who are inarguably among the most vulnerable members of our society—are subjected to corporal punishment. Still more distressing is that such demonstrably harmful practices continue despite our decades long initiatives to combat domestic violence, peer bullying, and other forms of interpersonal violence. Dana Shilling’s article places in high relief the inherent contradictions of this nation’s efforts to stem violence perpetrated by adults in their homes while permitting adults to inflict violence upon disabled children in our schools. Her piece reminds us, in no uncertain terms, that we ought to know and do better.
