Abstract: 

Logan County, Ohio, is located in west central Ohio, approximately 60 miles west and north of the state capitol, Columbus. In contrast to a population exceeding 1 million in the metropolitan Columbus area, Logan County, including the county seat, Bellefontaine, has a population of approximately 46,000 people. The county remains largely rural, including a relatively significant population of elderly individuals clustered in two villages, Russells Point and Lakeview, adjacent to Indian Lake State Park. Many of today’s elderly originally arrived here as youth or young adults from large midwestern cities during the summer months for the resort and recreational opportunities afforded, and ended up eventually staying for their retirement years. Sadly, many of the once fine summer cottages of almost a century ago have declined badly, standing alongside many very expensive homes recently built in the area. The result is a checkered mixture of housing stock and lifestyles. While comprising only about 6,000 residents out of the total county population, this section of the county accounts for at least 60% of the adult protective services reports. This article is a personal account of the author’s “learning curve” with VED issues.
