Abstract:

We have been reporting on the progress being made in Alabama via the class action in Braggs v. Dunn. In the latest reported iteration Judge Myron H. Thompson signed off on an Order adopting an exemplary intake screening and evaluation process. In this article, we examine the parties’ agreement on health screening at reception—a vitally important function that, while it cannot guarantee adequate inmate health and mental health care, is certain to result in inadequate care if absent. Judge Thompson’s order serves as an outstanding example of what intake should consist of and provides a model every correctional facility can benefit from.
