Abstract:

Alcohol monitoring has been used in a wide range of community supervision strategies for decades. What began as large and cumbersome table top units evolved into smaller and more reliable units, sensors hidden in telephone receiver handsets, deep lung testing, passive breath analysis, and the continued evolution of both the technology of alcohol testing and the applications used to manage these tools. With the array of choices available to agencies, this article takes a brief look at this market segment in order to help administrators, judges, and corrections professionals determine what might be the best fit for their particular situation, with a focus on the advantages and drawbacks, respectively, of “Anecdotal Monitoring” (transdermal and EtG) and “Real Time Testing” (deep lung BrAC tests).
